The Alchemy of Nature: The Intricate Process of Creating Healing Oils
Posted by Digital Guider on
Healing oils, also known as essential oils, have been used for centuries for their therapeutic properties. These are highly concentrated plant extracts that are obtained through various methods of extraction, normally water/steam distillation.
In this blog, we'll explore how essential oils, aka, healing oils of the bible are prepared.
Plant Selection
The quality of the plant material used will directly impact the quality of the final product. Plants used for essential oil production should be of the highest quality, and harvested at the right time.
Extraction Methods
There are several methods of extracting healing oils from plants, including:
- Steam distillation: This is the most common method of extraction, and involves passing steam through the plant material to extract the oil. This is the most common method used today.
- Expression: This method involves pressing the plant material to extract the oil, as is the case with citrus oils.
- Solvent extraction: This method uses solvents to extract the oil from the plant material. It is less commonly used and is reserved for plants that cannot be steam distilled. Kure-It Rx healing oils do not use unnatural solvents in our extraction methods.
- Heat Extraction: This method uses heat and sometimes pressure to extract the oils from the plant material. It is less commonly used and is reserved for plants that cannot be steam distilled, and where solvents are not desired. This is a natural processing and can result in changes in some of the chemical structures of the plant oils or resins, at times multiplying their effectiveness.
Steam Distillation Process
During the steam distillation process, steam is passed through the plant material, causing the oil to evaporate. The steam and oil vapour are then cooled, causing the oil to condense back into a liquid state. The oil is then separated from the water, resulting in a pure, concentrated essential oil.
Quality Control
It is important to perform quality control measures to ensure that the oil is pure and of the highest quality. This includes testing for purity, potency, and consistency. The oil is also evaluated for aroma, which is an important indicator of quality.
Dilution
Dilution with carrier oils not only helps to reduce the risk of skin irritation but also allows the oils to be absorbed more easily into the skin. Some popular carrier oils include sweet almond oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil.
Packaging
Healing oils are typically sold in small glass bottles with dropper tops, which make it easy to dispense the oil. The bottles are usually dark in color, which helps to protect the oil from light, which can degrade the quality of the oil over time.
Storage
Essential oils must be stored in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Exposure to light and heat can cause the oils to degrade and lose their potency over time.
By following these steps, the resulting healing oil is a pure and concentrated extract. You can use these essential oils for multiple purposes like heel pain, backache, allergy, dandruff, spiritual practices etc.
